OVERVIEW
Please read the about ZXED page.

To use this editor just open index.html in Netscape Navigator 3.0 and set up an ASCII editor as a helper application for a fictitious mime type called text/zupergraphyx in Netscape's Options/General Preferences... menu, under the Helpers tab. (Click Create new type..., fill in text in the Mime Type box, and zupergraphyx in the Mime SubType box.)

The editor interface consists of six parts (six frames):

Header Style
Body Buttons
Browser Saver

Header
is what is put in the beginning of an HTML page: <TITLE>, <BASE HREF>,<BODY>,... Scroll down in this frame and you will find some utilities.

Body
is where most editting is done. If you scroll up in this window you will find a place to write and edit scripts and other <HEAD> stuff.

Browser
is the frame where you interact with the files on your hard disk. Locate files and put them in the body of your HTML document from here.

Style
is where the styles appear after you save or load them. From here you can click on style items to add them to the body of the HTML document.

Buttons
is a toolbox for adding common tags to your document.

Saver
is for previewing and saving your documents and styles.

HEADER         /\

BODY         /\
This is where most of the code is put. There are two areas: HEAD and BODY.

In the first area you put stuff that needs to go between HEAD tags in the HTML code (META and SCRIPT tags, eg).

In the BODY area the main part of your HTML document goes. You can type things here, cut and paste or generate code by means of items in the
Buttons and Browser frames.

BROWSER         /\

The Browser is used for finding files on your harddisk and putting them in the Body in a tag. The way to work is to first click the Browse... button which will open a standard File Find dialog box. Then select a file. The full path to the file will appear in the text box to the left of the Browse... button. Then you can decide what you want to do with this file by clicking on one of the icons. (Relative paths are automatically added where needed.)
ADD Adds the URL of the file relative to the BASE HREF. If you didn't define a BASE HREF this will define the path to the file as the BASE HREF.
VIEW Opens a new Netscape window with the file loaded in order for you to preview it.
SET BACKGROUND Sets the file as the background image of this document.
ADD AS IMAGE Inserts the file as an inline image. Correct width and height are automatically added. ALT (for alternative, ie the text that is shown before an image is loaded or as a tooltip in Explorer) needs to be filled in.
EMBED Adds the file in an Embed tag. This should be used for files that are shown in Netscape by means of a plugin (like Shockwave). You should have the plugin installed to be able to preview the file. Correct width and height are not automatically added.
ADD AS APPLET Adds the file as a Java applet. You still need to fill and add the parameters with cut and paste. Correct width and height are not automatically added.
SET BASE HREF Sets the BASE HREF of a document. This should be the path to the document on your hard disk. Usually the BASE HREF is automatically filled in based on the location of the first file you add to the Body by means of the Browser. If you change it with this button you will need to adapt the relative links made before.
This BASE HREF is deleted when the document is saved or when you preview its code, but is needed by ZXED to function properly.
ADD AS HYPERLINK Adds a hyperlink to the file with the words Click here as clickable item. You should replace Click here with whatever you want to be clickable.
LOAD AS WORK Loads a document previously saved with the Save work command in the Saver frame. This document is not a normal HTML document but includes scripts that the editor needs.
LOAD AS STYLE Loads a document previously saved with the Save style command in the Saver frame. This document is not a normal HTML document but includes scripts that the editor needs.

Tip: If you want to insert instead of append, type the
Insertion character (default = ) where you want to insert.

STYLE         /\
The upper right frame is where Styles are shown after you save them in the Saver or load them with the Browser. Basically it is an HTML page with clickable inline images. If you click on an image, a tag for it is added to the Body. Images larger than 50 pixels on either side will be resized in the Styles window, but will be added with normal WIDTH and HEIGHT tags to the Body. Caution: if you resize the image in a paint program after you made the Style, the sizes will not be adjusted. You will have to re-save the Style if you want the correct WIDTH and HEIGHT to appear.

Tip: If you want to insert instead of append, type the Insertion character (default = ) where you want to insert.

BUTTONS         /\
The upper four list boxes provide shortcuts to common HTML tags. Select an item and it gets added to the Body.

The grey table provides a way to add a template for a table or a frameset. Click on a radio button () to select the layout you want and then click on either the TABLE of FRAMESET button. You will have to do the fine tuning manually.

The two lower textarea's are 'custom clipboards'. Paste something in them and click on the Insert button next to them to put it in the Body

Tip: If you want to insert instead of append, type the
Insertion character (default = ) where you want to insert.

SAVER         /\

VIEW CODE Opens a Netscape Window with a preview of the HTML code generated by ZXED. Close the window when you're done previewing.
SAVE CODE Opens an HTML stream of Mime type text/zupergraphyx. If you configured Netscape to use an ASCII editor as a helper application for this Mime type, this ASCII editor will be launched with the code of the page you created. In the ASCII editor you can save the file. (Note that ZXED cannot reload this kind of file. Use Save work to be able to reload your documents.)
RENDER Opens a new Netscape window with your HTML page loaded. Close the window when you're done previewing.
SAVE WORK Launches the ASCII editor helper application with a special HTML document you can use to continue work on the page later. Save this document in the ASCII editor.
This document can be loaded into ZXED with Load work in the Browser. Note that ZXED cannot load 'normal' HTML pages. If you plan to work on a page later you need to save it with this function.
SAVE STYLE Launches the ASCII editor helper application with a special HTML document that defines the Styles of the page you created (ie Title, Background, Body colours and inline images). Save this document in the ASCII editor. This document can be loaded into ZXED with Load work in the Browser.
The inline images will automatically appear in the Style frame from where you can click on them to put them in the Body.
